Artist Statement:
A person may look at a palette of colors, with no form of realism, and enjoy it for
only for its beautiful colors, shapes, texture, apparent movement and detail.
Sunshine and bright, beautiful colors somehow turn on a switch in my mind, and give me a sense of well-being and energy. Conversely, long periods of dark grey, gloomy days make me feel depressed and lethargic.
I enjoy experimentation, invention and the act of creation as it allows me to create anything my mind can imagine, with my brushes and palette on the canvas and the canvas is my universe to be made as I wish.
Through experimentation, I have developed 2 unique painting techniques that I use to make Abstract Expressionist art.
The first technique I call “Flow Art”, which is like a multi-colored marbling effect with thousands of minute color lines in swirling patterns creating a of a rainbow of flowing colors with eddies, ridges, crannies, currents and swirls. “Flow Art” creates the illusion of apparent movement in the painting.
The second technique that I have developed I call “Spotilism”. Not to be confused with “Pointilism”, the “Spotilism” technique piles thousands of large and small thick liquid paint droplets of different colors on top of each other on the canvas. The paint spots build up, one on top of another; until I achieve the depth and texture that I want in the painting. This creates a very colorful 3 dimensional effect, almost like sculpture with paint droplets. The Spots of paint must dry between applications, so these types of paintings can take months and hundreds of thousands of drops to complete the art work, therefore, the technique is very time consuming. When completed, the many of layers of spots of differing colors build up to create depth and shape and texture in the art works image.
Most recently, I have felt constricted and limited by the common shapes of the rectangular or square canvases that I have been using for many years.
I have now started to make my own canvases or panels in “Biomorphic” shapes of my own design.
These handmade by the Artist, Biomorphic shaped panels, combined with my own unique Abstract Expressionist painting techniques, make my art like no other in the world.
